State law requires that rice growers impound pesticide-treated irrigation water until the pesticides have broken down into nontoxic chemicals. This publication provides a brief overview of three irrigation systems for tailwater management which offer alternatives to the conventional, flowthrough irrigation system. Adoption of any one of these systems will provide greater water management flexibility and reduce or eliminate the possibility of spillage during water holding periods.
